Lee Weems' Applied Pistolcraft

uest Instructor:
Lee Weems, First Person Safety
https://firstpersonsafety.com/

Lee Weems combines two decades of experience and training as a peace officer with education from many of the most renowned names in the personal safety training industry into this learning experience. The class begins with his “Standing Your Ground” presentation on the dynamics of deadly force encounters and then moves to the range for a shooting experience that actively incorporates the four lifestyle rules for possessing a firearm including shoot/no-shoot decision making, changing your angle to get a safer shot, divided attention drills, and priority of fire considerations.

The class will conclude with the FBI Pistol Qualification Course. Students will receive a letter of documentation.

The Civilian Defender and the After Action Project have featured reviews of Lee’s training, and he is a frequent guest co-host on Civilian Carry Radio, where he has also been interviewed as a special guest.

Skill Level: In order to attend this class, the student should be capable of following directions, accepting coaching, and have safe gun-handling skills. There will be some movement with drawn pistols and shots at 25 yards. There will be strict time and accuracy standards.

Students will need to bring the following:

  • All personal safety equipment (eye/ear protection, brimmed hat, etc)

  • A quality firearm with a minimum 6-shot capacity

  • Minimum of three magazines of 10-round capacity or more; a minimum of five magazines if less than 10-round capacity. Revolver shooters will need at least five loaders.

  • A holster that will not collapse when the pistol is drawn and that does not have a retention device that requires the use of the trigger finger to actuate (such as the Serpa). AIWB is good to go, but no crossdraw or shoulder rigs.

  • Concealment garment

  • Personal comfort items (drinks, food, chairs, etc)

  • 800 rounds of ammunition

Lee's Class Policies

From Lee Weems (Guest Instructor):

  • Weather Policy: If the weather is such that it jeopardizes the students’ safety, the class will be postponed or delayed as appropriate. Otherwise, the class will go forth as scheduled rain or shine.

  • Cancellation Policy: The deposit is non-refundable if you choose not to attend the class. If the range were to cancel, full refunds will be made. I reserve the right to cancel the class and grant full refunds if fewer than eight students sign up for the class.

Immediate Action Pugilism 101:
Boxing for Self-Preservation in the Weapons Based Environment

Sometimes, in order to defend ourselves and our loved ones, the only tool we might have to rely on is our own body. Even if you have external weapons, you might not be able to access them. Your safety may come down to how well you can survive a hand-to-hand confrontation. The Immediate Action Pugilism course is designed to give the layman a realistic and functional set of concepts, techniques, methodologies, training drills and experiences that will prepare them for a worst case H2H scenario. All techniques and concepts are high percentile applications which span a wide spectrum of confrontations. Training consists of presentation, drilling and Force-On-Force evolutions providing attendees with immediate feedback regarding the efficacy of the skills learned. The goal of this course is not to create a professional boxer or MMA competitor. The objective is to provide attendees who have limited training time and resources with solid fundamentals geared toward the increasingly violent weapon based environments they may live, work and/or travel within. All the techniques presented are based time tested and proven Boxing and MMA Striking methodologies and are the best, most functional and high percentage moves and tactics available.

  • These methods are for everyone regardless of physical condition – young, old, male, female, athlete or not – You DO NOT have to be a professional fighter to perform at a functional level. This will be a class about physical training, but it is NOT boot camp. Participants may go at the pace that is comfortable for them, while trying to push the envelope of their own individual performance.

  • Requirements: Boxing gloves (at least 12oz or bigger unless per-authorized by the instructor), loose, comfortable but durable clothes, mouthpiece, cup, notebook, and an open mind. MMA gloves are strongly encouraged, but are not mandatory.

Immediate Action Pugilism is divided into modules that address specific situations. Seminars/training can be customized to fit your needs by arranging for the appropriate modules to be covered. Topics covered will include:

  • Why should we think about Striking in a Self-defense context?

  • Underlying Concepts and Mindset for use

  • Dealing with the Sucker Punch / Ambush

  • The Default Cover

  • Transitioning to and Regaining the Initiative

  • 1st stage of defense – the fighting platform

  • 2nd stage of defense – arm motion, footwork, level change

  • 1st stages of offense – tight jab & cross; proper method of delivering impact safely

  • Secondary Striking Tools (Eye Jab, Elbow, Knee, Slap )

  • Fundamentals of the Clinch/Safely Entering

  • Controlling the Entanglement

  • Individual & Partner Drills

  • Gradual introduction and immersion into sparring

  • Fighting at Close Quarters; attached and unattached

  • Disengaging from the clinch

  • Safely gaining distance for escape, weapons access, or orientation reset

  • Keeping the Fight standing, realistically defending the takedown

  • Performance Coaching and Troubleshooting

  • Insights and Suggestions for Solo Training

  • Tips and pointers on how to train the material with the limitations of a real world lifestyle

Immediate Action Jiu-Jitsu 101:
Real World Combative Application of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Contrary to popular belief, many empty hand fights and those involving weapons, end up on the ground. No amount of pontificating or self-proclaimed “expert“posturing will change this simple fact. If you ignore this reality, you may very well find yourself in a situation you cannot handle with disastrous consequences. The Immediate Action Jiu-Jitsu course is designed to give the layman a realistic and functional set of concepts, techniques, methodologies, training drills and experiences that will prepare them for a worst case “ground-fight” scenario. All techniques and concepts are high percentile applications which span a wide spectrum of confrontations. Training consists of presentation, drilling and force-on-force evolutions providing attendees with immediate feedback regarding the efficacy of the skills learned. The goal of this course is not to create a “ground fighter” or grappler. The objective is to provide attendees who have limited training time and resources with solid ground survival and escape fundamentals geared toward the increasingly violent weapon based environments they may live, work and/or travel within. And all techniques/concepts are from Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and are combat proven over the past 80 years by thousands of practitioners, including the U.S. Army.

  • Requirements: Loose, comfortable but durable clothes, mouthpiece, cup, notebook, and an open mind.

Immediate Action Jiu-jitsu is divided into modules that address specific situations. Seminars/training can be customized to fit your needs by arranging for the appropriate modules to be covered. Topics covered will include:

  • Surviving/defending/escaping when you are on the ground underneath an attacker

  • Surviving/defending/escaping when you are on the ground and your opponent is standing

  • Functional methods of getting back to your feet

  • Countering takedowns and remaining on your feet

  • IFWA (in-fight weapon access)

  • Denying your opponent’s weapon access – understanding technique, positional hierarchy AND timing

  • Multiple opponents – realistically maximizing your chances

  • Surviving inside the guard

  • Proper usage of the guard to win/escape

  • Defending against punches, elbow strikes, stomps, kicks, etc…

  • Proper role of “dirty tactics”

  • Essential training principles, methods, & drills

  • How these concepts & techniques remain true with or without weapon involvement

  • Learning to deal with the most common MMA attacks and holds

  • Recognizing and defending against common submissions (guillotine, rear naked choke, triangle, arm bar, etc.)

  • Structuring and balancing your training and integrating it into a busy real world lifestyle

Advanced Recoil Management with Paul Sharp & William Aprill

The Pistol Intensive Weekend is designed for individuals who are interested in dramatically increasing their pistol skills and performance a brief, concentrated timeframe. PIW is appropriate for student shooters in any chosen context: private-citizen concealed carry, home defense, law-enforcement/duty purposes, and the shooting sports. The emphasis of the instruction is on increasing applied speed and accuracy with carry guns rather than on tactical or scenario-based exercises. We believe that “running the gun” faster than one thought possible while maintaining life-saving accuracy is achievable for the motivated student and that confidence with one’s pistol comes from the competence this demanding coursework will instill. The program of instruction is comprised of two one-day courses which may be taken individually (8+ hours each) or back-to-back (totaling 16+ hours).

Part of our method is that PIW courses are necessarily high round-count training (+/-1250 per day, +/-2500 for both days) in order to ingrain the new technical components, to reveal and highlight performance areas in need of remediation, and to cover the amount of essential material. Please note that this is not a “spray and pray” environment, but rather one of intensive scrutiny and accountability for every round fired, just as is the case in the larger world.

There are no formal prerequisites to attendance other than willingness to learn and absolute commitment to safe gunhandling. Please contact either instructor with any questions about individual readiness for the courses. We will challenge you and make you a better shooter.
